Burying Grounds Of Sharon, Connecticut.
Being An Abstract Of Inscriptions From Thirty Places Of Burial.

[Transcribed by Dave Swerdfeger ]

PREFACE.

A few years since (in 1897) a little book was published, entitled: "Born, Married and Died, in Sharon, Conn." It was a record of the births, marriages and deaths gathered from old books of land records in the Sharon Town Clerk's Office. So few deaths, however, were recorded there that the book was not exactly what its title implied, and the promise was made that another should follow, giving records found on the headstones in the several places of burial in the township. While the inscriptions were being collected, a friend suggested that, inasmuch as there had been frequent intermarriages between people residing in Sharon, and those of the adjoining towns of Amenia and North East, in New York state, the inscriptions to be found in those towns should be added, since it would materially increase the value of the work. This has been done, and the book now offered contains the records found in the many places of burial scattered over an area of not less than twenty miles square, of adjacent territory, lying on both sides of the line dividing the States of New York and Connecticut. To the friend to whom we allude, the entire credit is due for that portion of the work relating to inscriptions found on the New York side of the line. It a source of regret to the writer that this friend may not be mentioned by name in order that the readers of this volume might know to whom they are indebted for this last mentioned labor. The full texts of the inscriptions are not given, since this would make the book too large and expensive. Care, however, has been taken to give the names, dates and ages correctly, and the book is believed to be as free from errors as the average of such efforts. The inscriptions from each burying ground are printed together, with a brief description of their locality, and the condition of the headstones at the present time. The only index thought necessary is one giving the names and localities of the several burying grounds. The names will be found in alphabetical order. It is hoped and expected that a sufficient number of books will be sold to repay the cash outlay. The labor has been one of love, for which no better remuneration is asked than that derived from the satisfaction of being the means of preserving valuable records, which would otherwise soon be lost entirely. To some it is impossible to explain why such a work is undertaken, but there are others who appreciate efforts of this kind. To the latter class this book is respectfully dedicated.
    L. VAN ALSTYNE, SHARON, CONN.

THE PINE SWAMP BURYING GROUND.

Having heard it called the Pine Swamp Burying Ground it is given that title, yet there is nothing about the neighborhood to suggest the name. It is located on the left hand side of the road as one goes from Sharon to West Cornwall, on ground high and dry. A more fitting name would be the Smith Burying Ground, there being many of that name buried there.

It is on Sharon Mountain, and the road leading past it is known as Ellsworth East Street. It is well fenced and very well cared for, and is still used as a place of burial.

THE MALCUIT FARM BURYING GROUND. Sharon, Ct.

On the farm of Charles Malcuit, on Sharon Mountain, in a pasture field, are two headstones inscribed as below. There are evidences of many graves that are not marked, but no one seems to remember any more about it than can now be discovered by a visit to it. It is large in area for a family burying ground, and doubtless was a neighborhood affair, before the one in the "Cartwright neighborhood" was used.

BURYING GROUND IN TICKNOR'S WOODS. Sharon, Ct.

On the north side of the road leading from Ellsworth, East Street, to Ellsworth proper, is the original burying ground of the Ellsworth society. When it was first used for that purpose is not known now. The last burial there was a daughter of Joseph Lord, Esq., and was probably not far from 1778. The grave being filled with water so impressed Mr. Lord with the necessity for a more suitable place of burial that he immediately gave the society the land for the present Ellsworth Cemetery. He died in 1778, and his headstone recites the fact that he was the first person buried in the ground he had given. A forest of trees now covers the old place of burial, among which the rows of graves yet show. Many of them are marked by stones native to the place, only two having headstones with inscriptions. It would be interesting to know the names of these silent sleepers, but for that we must wait till the graves are opened and the dead arise.

The two inscriptions found are:
  • ROBERTS, Mr. Mark, d. Feb. 17, 1767, in his 84th yr.
  • ROBERTS, Mr. Nathaniel, d. Jan. 16, 1766, in his 55th yr.

Mr. Samuel Everett of Ellsworth says that the following were buried in this place: Adonijah MAXAM, Amos SANFORD. Joseph LOVELL, Nathaniel CHAPMAN, Deborah LORD, wife of Isaiah EVERETT and dau. of Joseph LORD, Esq.

THE ELLSWORTH BURYING GROUND. Sharon, Ct.

This ground was given to the Ellsworth Society by Joseph Lord, Esq., and his headstone recites the fact that he was the first to be buried in it. It is the common place of burial for a large section of the country roundabout. It has the appearance of being well kept and cared for. The headstones are in an upright position and the few that have become broken have been neatly repaired. It lies on the south side of the road between the two churches.

THE SKIFF MOUNTAIN BURYING GROUND.

This burying ground is in Kent, but near the Sharon line. Some Sharon people are buried there, and for that reason it is included among the Sharon cemeteries. There are as many, and perhaps more, graves without headstones as with, and no record has been kept to show who are buried in them. The ground is kept in fair condition, but several headstones have fallen flat to the ground.
