Pastors and People of Somerset Classis, published by Berlin Publishing Company, Somerset County, 1940, we find a sketch of Glade Church by A.R. Glessner: "The history of Glade Church begins with services held in a school-house a short distance from the location of the present Church. 1812 is the traditional date of the organization of the congregation by Rev. Henry Giese. Among the other charter members are found the names of Elias Altfather; Joseph Glessner, Sr; Abraham Landis, Sr., and Jacob Zeigler.

The earliest record coming down from the congregation bears the date of May 19, 1814, when Rev. Giese baptized three children. The veteran pastor records the list of communicants each year from 1821 to 1833 inclusive. "In Yahr 1821 den 4ten November wurde von der. Reformirten fur Iten Mahl in der Kirche das Heilige Abendmah ! gehalten and funden diese folgende Personen dabel". In the year 1821 on the fourth of November the Holy Communion was held by the Reformed for the first time in the church, and found the following persons present. Then follow the names of twenty seven communicants in addition to twenty confirmations. All the baptisms and communicants by Rev. Giese were recorded in German Script by his own hand.

The first church building, dedicated St. Mary's Union Church, was erected probably in 1819 or 1820, on the northeast corner of the intersection of the crossroads near the present Lutheran Church, a plot of ground now occupied by the old Union Cemetery, which was presented to the Lutheran and Reformed Congregations for church purposes by Jacob Mosholder. The first church was a log building, 34 x 34 feet. Later it was weatherboarded and remained in a remarkable state or preservation until 1839, when it was sold to E.M. Lambert for sixty dollars ($60.00).

The present church was erected in 1837. Peter T. Miller; W.J. Glessner; and John Altfather, were appointed a committers to select a site and raise $1800.00 toward the erection of a church. The committee reported the selection of the present site and $1805.00 subscribed. The building committee, consisting of Peter T. Miller, John M. Glessner, and Jefferson Altfather, was instructed to proceed with the erection of a church to cost approximately $2500.00. The cornerstone was laid June 21, 1838. The church was dedicated February 24, 1889. From an account of the dedication written by Rev. A.J. Heller, and published in the Somerset Herald, March 20, 1839, the following is taken:- "Last spring the Lutheran and Reformed congregation by the advice and under the efficient leadership of their pastor Rev. Hiram H. King, of Somerset, began the erection of a beautiful church located a little to the south of the old church in an angle formed by the convergence of the roads from Roxbury (now known in 1953, as Route #160). After long and weary delay, caused by the want of promptness on the part of those who had contracted to furnish the glass, the dedicatory services were held on Sunday morning, the 24th ult.
